"At Wayne State University's School of Medicine, we were shown dozens of pornographic (OK, highly pornographic) films as part of the curriculum. The rationale for such an unusual academic inclusion, we were told, was so that we would not react in disgust or surprise if a patient revealed sexual proclivities that were, well, strange. By exposing us to every imaginable sexual practice, they hoped to desensitize us so that we could just deal with the medical issues, leaving judgment about such practices to God, or perhaps to Jerry Springer and his audience."
Is this a part of every medical school curriculum?
I still don't know what to think about Dr. Pezzi's site, other than it's "interesting". I wish I had more time to spend on it. Here are a few things to check out on Dr. Pezzi's site if you are in the mood for something different:
http://www.erbook.net/
All about emergency rooms and ER as a career (he pretty much says it sucks).
http://www.er-doctor.com/
Information for people contemplating a career in emergency medicine and other medical specialties (he pretty much says don't do it, it sucks)
You can read about love and lust in the ER here.
This is the best part. Dr. Pezzi provides a way for people to show their appreciation to ER docs:

Too funny. Is he for real? I only took a quick look but I couldn't decide. The part that was the oddest was how he has set up online dating services.
I hope that you and yours have a great Christmas, Carver
PS I'm still hoping there will be a Dr. December.
Um. Yeah, I think I won't be adding him to my blogroll. Just too out there for me.
Stop fooling around with this stuff and get on with Dr December. Or is he (well I suppose it could be a she)being a reluctant one.
Well it takes all kinds to make the world and I suppose that is very true of ER docs who always seem rather maverick to me.
I can confirm that my school has shown porn in class. In my Behavioral Science (Psych) course we had 2 lectures on sexuality with one of the most over-the-top lecturers I've ever seen. As part of one of the lectures, he put on this movie from the 80's with a dead-pan voice-over explaining in detail every aspect of what was going on. I believe one of the direct quotes explained that "male superior fellatio can be enjoyable for both parties, as long as she doesn't choke." I've never enjoyed lecture quite so much.
When one of my classmates ran out with her hands over her eyes, the lecturer said that the purpose of showing this was to desensitize us to people's weird sexual practices and if we couldn't handle this, that we should probably be looking for a new profession.
Needless to say, the new course director was not pleased at this series of lectures and said that the lecturer would not be invited back next year.
Oh, my goodness...how did I ever miss this post??? :) :)
He's either not a real doctor, or he has some sort of personality disorder. In one of his stories he writes, Years ago I had a young lady as a patient in the ER after she'd been in a horrific car accident that mangled her face. If most people saw her they would probably wince in disgust, but I was able to instantly realize that she would be very beautiful once her face was reassembled. If I did not have this conception of the endpoint, how else could I have performed the surgery?
Is it plausible to believe that an ER doctor would have the time and skill to do this kind of surgery? Sorry, I don't believe him.
My guess is that he is not a doctor, just a very well-read "artist" with a vivid fantasy life. But he writes in a very entertaining style! I'll give him that much.
Like I said, the site is "interesting". (I'm giggling as I type this.) I need to go back and check out some more of the stories. Thanks for stopping by.
You're welcome. I enjoy your blog, especially the doctor of the month interviews. You have a wonderful sense of humor. I'm amazed at how many talented blog writers like you amuse the rest of us for free. Is the Internet great or what?
