Another Day at the Office

The writer’s block continues. Dr. Dino has suggested I let the obnoxious lawyer bitch girl out to play on my blog. I love how that sounds. I am going to write about medblogs tomorrow. But today, here’s a glimpse into my glamorous, exciting work life:

This morning, Bookkeeper comes into work with a little sniffle and a tiny cough...

Partner: Oh BK, you’re sick. You are such a dedicated worker. But you should go home and take care of yourself. Be sure to call us if you need anything.

I drag my ass into work, nose red and running; a deep wet cough...

Partner: You’re late. Where’s that memo (legal research) I asked you for?

Me: Sorry. I took some cold medicine and overslept.

Partner: If you’re sick, stay in your office and keep the door closed.
AND TRY NOT TO BREATHE ON ANYONE.

I don’t know if it will work, but I plan on licking every piece of paper I hand to him today.

Just cough into your hands and then handle the papers over and over. There are more germs in respiratory secretions than in saliva. I like the way you think, though.

And btw, Nyquil is 25% alcohol. Once you get home, settle for some hot tea with honey and hooch. Same active ingredient and tastes a shitload better.

I'm home sick today. Nothing contagious though, migraine related.

Why do we always have this "pressure" to perform no matter what the circumstances? You need to be on your deathbed to take a sick day?

I know I always feel guilty for taking time away from work and I'm a peon. No "executive decisions" are made by me.

Sorry you have a bogus double standard as well. It's all so ridiculous but it's the way of the Western World's work ethic?

Ooh ooh! Being the kind concerned soul I am, I volunteer to bring you some MRSA from the hospital I'm working in. You could dump it on a whole stack of letters and dump it in his face.

Collect the hankies in which you cough and sneeze. Rub those hankies over his doorknob and phone. Pay special attention to any taps or door-fittings in his washroom.

Make sure that his office is hot and dry, this will dry out his airways and make him more vulnerable. It will also dry out his eyes and encourage him to rub them with his contaminated fingers.

If he has a nasal spray then

No, I really must stop now.

I think that treating your staff very well leads to retaining very competent staff.
Why can't the partners see that treating their associates the same way, would help retain the associates? No one is going to die if I take a sick day. We will not lose a case because I take a sick day. (We may, however, lose it if I try to argue it or brief it when I'm zonked up on cold meds.)
No solutions -- but plenty of sympathy.

You medical types are evil. Thanks for the suggestions. I think i heard him sneezing today.

PA- I hope you feel better.

Another Lawyer--thanks for your comment. Have you learned how to bill for reading the medblogs yet?

Oh no - cough in your hand and then handle his papers - much more effective! (and appropriate since he is such a turkey!)

Hope you feel better by now!
